Frequently asked questions

What’s in a Hatch Bag?

Each Hatch bag is filled with at least 16 newborn essentials:

  • Sleepsuit, vest, leggings, warm top, hat, socks

  • Nappies, wipes, aqueous cream, cotton wool, baby soap, face cloth

  • Blanket, soft toy, book from Book Dash

  • Sanitary pads for mom

How much does a Hatch Bag cost?

Each bag comes to around R550 - this all depends on how much is donated, and where we manage to find a good deal when shopping for all of the contents.

Do you take second hand donations?

Yes we do BUT we ask that you only donate things that are in excellent, nearly new condition. Nothing worn out, bobbled, torn or stained. Please make sure that everything is washed before you donate it to us. We like to say, if you’d give it to your best friend, then we’d be happy to gift it to a new mom.

Where do you deliver Hatch Bags?

We deliver Hatch bags to maternity units as well as other NGOs. In the past we’ve delivered bags to the Gugulethu Maternity Obstetric Unit, Groote Schuur Maternity and Mowbray Maternity. We also distribute our bags via community partners that run antenatal classes for expectant moms in the Cape Flats.

Where can I drop donations?

We run Hatch from our homes, in between busy work and family life! We are currently based between Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs and the City Bowl, but we do have a network of friends and supporters around Cape Town that can help get donations to us! So please get in touch and we can make an arrangement.

Can I volunteer?

We run Hatch from our homes, so we’re not set up for proper volunteering at the moment. But if you’ve run a collection drive and would like to arrange a packing session at your school, or place of work, we can deliver empty bags to you!

Can I buy a Hatch toy?

Yes! We sell our Hilda x Hatch giraffes to help support our work. Its a ‘buy-one give-one’ deal, where each toy purchased also donates one for our Hatch bags, to go to a newborn in need.

Are you NPO Registered?

Yes! We’re excited to share that following 7 years of running Hatch, we have finally made it official. The Hatch Foundation trading as Hatch, was registered in March 2023. NPC Reg: 2023/642384/08

Can you provide Section 18A tax certificates?

Yes! We have received our PBO status from SARS. This enables us to provide companies with Section 18A tax certificates for your donations. If your business would like to support Hatch, please get in touch with us and we can update you!

Can you provide a BBBEE certificate?

Our beneficiaries are >75% black women, and we can provide an affidavit for BBBEE purposes.
